A new Google Camera mod has been released which brings Astrophotography and Super Res Zoom to older Pixel phones. Both of these feature are officially available on Pixel 4, but thanks to Google Camera 7.2 mod, these feature can now be used on Pixel 1 and Pixel 2 smartphones.
Since most of the camera features that Google introduces in the latest Pixel phones use machine learning and artificial intelligence, it is possible to port these back to older phones. There might be a performance hit due to slower internals, but more often than not, you can get better results with a ‘Gcam mode’ than the stock camera app.

The mod has been created by XDA member cstartk27 and has been tested on Pixel 2, however, it should also work well on Pixel 1. Once you download and install the Google Camera 7.2 APK, you can use features like Astrophotography mode (to capture photos of stars through long exposure shots), Night Sight for low light photography, portrait mode for photos with blurry backgrounds, and Super Res Zoom, which is Google’s machine learning based zoom feature. You get all these features for free thanks to dedicated XDA community members, as well as fewer reasons to upgrade to Pixel 4.
Here are the complete release note for Google Camera 7.2:
* Enable Astro mode for Pixel 1 & 2
* Enable Focus options in Night Sight (along with “infinity” – may be same as far)
* Modded lib for Learned Depth in Portrait Mode (Pixel 2)
* Enable Super Res Zoom while zoomed or in Night Sight (no zoom required) – this is like Pixel 3 stock
* Enable auto timer (photobooth), it’s in the selfie camera in the Timer options
* Enable synthetic fill flash for Pixel 2 and enable SFF in Camera mode for 3a
The developer says that he is working on bringing more features to the Google Camera mod. For now, this is a must-have mod to use on your Pixel 1 and Pixel 2 phones. We wouldn’t be surprised if the new HDR+ features from Pixel 4 are also back-ported in a future Google Camera mod update.
Note that this Google Camera mod will only work on old Pixel phones and not other Android phones from third-party OEMs. It is certain that developers will already be working to make that happen. For now, enjoy these new camera tricks on your older Pixel.
